Reading Text: Beezus and Ramona by Beverly Cleary The students will read the book Beezus and Ramona.  They will keep a log of unfamiliar vocabulary.   Reading Log: Please have your child fill out the reading log each night after they have read 20 minutes. Parents need to sign and date the reading log each day. They should be at 20% of their goal by the end of this week.
Language Writing     We will be writing narrative essays using a prompt.  We will edit and make improvements in the essays during the week.    Language Skill-      We will continue studying possessive nouns and pronouns.   Spelling – Unit 4 Lesson 2: Suffixes – able, -ful, - ed This week's words are: acceptable, adorable, thankful, careful, added, folded, handed, planted, spelled, sailed, rained, smiled, washed, passed, hopped, yelled, cooked, helped, slipped, picked.  The test will be on Thursday.    When studying these words, please talk about the meanings of each word.
Important Information: Scholastic Reading Club orders - We will be sending home Scholastic Reading Club flyers for March.  I have a free book certificate for anyone ordering $10 or more during this month.  I will send these certificates home with the book flyers.  They can be used with online orders.  The deadline for ordering is Monday, March 9. If you are not ordering online, please send the order form and check made payable to Scholastic Reading Clubs by Monday, March 10.  My code online code is GNJNJ.  Ms. Smith also has an online code.  If your child is in Ms. Smith’s homeroom, please use her code.  It helps her get points to build her library. Math:  This week we will continue our division unit.  The relationship between multiplication and division will continue to be reinforced.  Students will work on determining which operation would be used for various story problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).  A multiplication and division assessment will be given at the end of this week or next Monday. Also, we will pass off on 7's at the end of this week.  Please continue to study multiplication facts at home.

 

Science:  This week we will begin a new unit on Matter.  Students will look at the 3 different states of matter- solids, liquids, and gases.

Focus Skill: Nonfiction Features
We will be reading various Gail Gibbons books and identifying the features found in nonfiction text.  The vocabularywords for this week are: Headings (Titles/Subtitles/Topic Names), Maps, Photographs, Captions, Types of Print, Graphs, Cut-away, Comparisons, Labels, Diagrams, Table of Contents, Index, Glossary, Close-ups. 

AR Logs and Reading Logs:

Please have your child fill out the reading log each night after they have read 20 minutes. Parents need to sign and date the reading log each day. 

Writing

The children will create a character sketch based on a picture set during the time of the Great Depression or Dust Bowl.

Language Skill

We will focus on possessive nouns this week.

Spelling

Unit 3 Lesson 4: suffix -ly; -y; -ment; -tion

Week of February 17th

 

 

Math:  We will begin division this week.  We will use open arrays to relate division to multiplication.

 

 

We will take the 9's test on Wednesday this week.  If your child has not "passed off" on any of the past facts, he or she will need to make them up during intervention.  Please make sure your child practices multiplication fluency each night.

 

 

Science:  We will finish our force and motion/simple machines unit this week.
