This week in Language Arts

Week of December 16

Reading

We will finish illustrating the poem Twas the Night Before Christmas  for a class book. We will complete our study of how other countries celebrate Christmas.
AR Logs and Reading Logs:
Please have your child fill out the reading log each night after they have read 20 minutes. Parents need to sign and date the reading log each day. The halfway point for AR is December 19.

Language Skills

Acrostic Christmas poem for a classmate is due, framed and wrapped on Monday.  Mrs. Owens needs a copy of the poem.  It does not have to be on cute paper.

I want to do anything and everything I can to help your child learn their multiplication facts.  I need your help at home!  Please have your child study 10-15 minutes at home every night.

Math:  This week we will go "Holiday Shopping" in math to work on various skills learned during the first trimester.  This activity will be fun and engaging on the last week before Christmas break.  Our pass off test for 8's will be Thursday.

Math:  This week, we are working on solving real world problems and applying the multiplication strategies we have learned these past few weeks (distributive property, ratio tables, number line, skip counting, repeated addition).  Students will also be practicing a strategy for 4's (doubling the product of 2's to get the product for 4's).  PLEASE PLEASE make your child study at least 10 minutes every night for fluency.  The 4's fluency test will be Friday.  A weekly math quiz will be given on Friday.
 
 
Science:  We will wrap up the human body unit this week.  Students will learn about muscles and how they work.

This week's words are: deer, dear, groan, grown, hear, here, new, knew, through. threw. The test will be on Thursday. These words are very confusing, so please help your child study.
When studying these words, please talk about the meanings of each word. There is a PowerPoint on my website to help with the meanings.

This week in Language Arts

Week of December 2

Reading

Focus Skill: Sequence of Events, Letter Writing, Map Skills
We will be reading The Journey of Oliver K. Woodman.  A copy of the book can be found on my website.  The vocabulary words for this week are; sincere, reunion, pleasure, managed, inspired, loaded, conversations, terror, loveliest, currently.   The children will map the adventures of Oliver K. Woodman.

Writing
We will be identifying the parts of a friendly letter, and writing a friendly letter.

We will be learning about commas this week.

Multiplication Timed Tests


Students are required to correctly answer 25 problems in one minute and fifteen seconds in the third grade. Please use flashcards, computer games, etc. to practice these at least 10 minutes a night at home.

Here is the schedule we will follow:

Before Christmas-
Week of November 22- 0's, 1's, & 2's
Week of December 2- 5's & 10's
Week of December 9- 4's
Week of December 16- 8's

After Christmas-
Week of January 6- 3's
Week of January 13- 6's
Week of January 20- 12's
Week of January 27- 9's
Week of February 3- 7's
Week of February 10- 11's

Students will be allowed to make these tests up during intervention in the afternoons. 

Each child will receive a multiplication table chart with all the facts through 12X12.  They will color in the facts they pass off on each week.  They will also receive a husky paw print out for each fact passed off to color and keep in their math journal. Even if students pass off on certain facts, they need to continue to practice them.  Mastery will only come with practice.
Week of December 2nd
 
 
 
Math:  This week we will work on multiplication strategies for 10's and 5's.  Tuesday will be the 10's fluency test and Thursday will be the 5's fluency test.  We will also continue the "Big Dinner" investigation to work on conceptual knoweledge of multiplication.
 
Science: We will continue our study of the human body.  This week we will discuss joints and muscles.
