Week of October 28th
 
 
 
Math: This week we are continuing our multiplication unit.  Students will be working on creating arrays and learning strategies to count groups of objects.  Here are the following terms students will learn this week:

Science: This week we are finishing our Earth Materials unit by observing rocks and minerals and learning how to describe its properties.
 
 
 
 
 
Scholastic Book Clubs
We will send book order forms home on Friday. If you would like to order any books, the deadline for ordering is Friday, Nov. 1. Please have all online orders or checks made out to Scholastic Reading Club by Friday. Mrs. Owens' online code is GNJNJ. Ms. Smith's online code is GNNQQ. We will pass out the October and November forms for review. You can also order books for your electronic devices on this site through Storia.

Reading

Focus Skill: Questioning
We will continue reading the book Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner. As we read the book together, we will discuss vocabulary that is confusing and new to the children.  There will be a reading comprehension and vocabulary test at the end of the unit.   We will also read nonfiction selections about Wyoming, potato farming, and Samoyed.  Here are some vocabulary words we chose this week: palomino, hitched, rodeo, proceeded, irrigation, inspect, harvest, mature, concerned, strong box, mare, bushel, acre, determined, hind, plow.  The test on this book next week.

Reading Logs:
In your child’s folder you will find a pink reading log. Please have your child fill it out and you need to initial it nightly after they have read 20 minutes. Your child should be at 100% of his/her reading goal in AR by the end of this week.

 
Writing
We're using our Writer’s Notebook to create personal narratives. We will be learning how to edit as we write, and rehearsing storytelling and leads.
Language Skill
We will be learning about singular and plural nouns.
Spelling
Unit 2 Lesson 1: Tri-graph- igh, Long vowel (i) , y changing rule for adding suffixes.  Change the y to i before adding suffixes, unless the suffix begins with an i.
This week's words are: sky, dry, sly, why, myself, spied, spying, crying, cried, multiplying, reply, replies, apply, applied, carrier, easier, high, right, fright, nightlight. The test will be on Thursday.
When studying these words, please talk about the meanings of each word and the spelling rule used to  long vowel sounds when adding a suffix.  There is a PowerPoint on my website to help with the rules.

Math: This week we will finish Math Menu and begin our unit on Multiplication.  The unit will start out with an investigation problem involving groups of things found in a grocery store.
 
Science: This week we will continue our investigation with rocks and minerals and conduct a couple of experiments with the mock rocks.

Reading

Focus Skill: Sequencing

We will continue reading the story Bat Loves the Night from our Storytown reading book.  Vocabulary words are:  blanketed, surroundings, nocturnal, effort, dozes, swoops, detail, fluttering, plummet, inverted.  There will be a reading comprehension and vocabulary test Wednesday.  We will also read several poems and nonfiction selections about bats.

     In your child’s folder you will find a pink reading log.  Please have your child fill it out and you need to initial it nightly after they have read 20 minutes.  Your child should be at 80% of his/her reading goal in AR.

Week of October 14th

 

MATH: We will begin working on a Data and Graphs Menu this week. During the menu, students will have the opportunity to work alone or with a partner.  Part of the menu will be for a grade.

Science: We will continue our study of rocks and minerals. Students will observe and learn to describe the properties of rocks and minerals. We will also do an investigation involving mock rocks.
 
 
Remember that your child must complete 60 minutes of Dreambox each week for homework.  The schedule runs from Sunday to Saturday, which means that each homework week starts on Sunday and ends on Saturday.  Your child will receive a homework grade for Dreambox each week.  You can access grades on inow.  Please be sure to let me know when you have computer problems- we can work together to figure out a way for your child to complete the required time.  Thank you for your support at home.  I am confident that you will see math growth in your child this school year as a result.

Scholastic Book Fair

The Scholastic Book Fair will be going on in our school library this week.  Family night is Tuesday and Thursday from 4-6.  Please come and enjoy browsing through the books with your child.
Please save and send in any Boxtops for Education that you have.  This is an easy was to raise money for our school.  Tell other family members and friends to save them for us too.  You do not have to glue them on to anything.  Just cut them out and send them.  THANK YOU!
