Week of January 27

Reading

Focus Skill: Fact and Opinion
We will be reading “The Babe and I”. We will have a comprehension and vocabulary test on Friday.The vocabularywords for this week are skim, span, shabby, embarrass, midst, elevated, dazed, collapses, contribution, initiative.

AR Logs and Reading Logs:
Please have your child fill out the reading log each night after they have read 20 minutes. Parents need to sign and date the reading log each day.

Writing
The children will create a character sketch based on a picture set during the time of the Great Depression or Dust Bowl.
Language Skill

Review nouns, pronouns, plural nouns, subjects and predicates, and conjunctions.
Spelling
Unit 3 Lesson 3: (aw) and (au) sound spellings
This week's words are: straw, crawling, lawn, sawing, hawk, Auburn, because, author, caught, naughty, sauce, laundry, falling, salty, calling, tall, install, talking, walk, thought
When studying these words, please talk about the meanings of each word.

Math: This week we will continue the investigation, "Muffles Truffles".  Students will be working with arrays and the properties of multiplication.  We will continue our discussion on multiples of ten.

Fluency:  The 12's pass off test will be given on Friday.

Science:  This week we will begin our study of force and motion.

Week of January 20th
 

Math:  We will continue our "Muffles Truffles" investigation.  This week we will look at how many different size boxes can be made out of the truffles.

Fluency:  This Friday, students will pass off on 6's in multiplication.  If students need to make up any pass offs, he or she can take them individually at the beginning of intervention each day.  Please continue to help encourage your child to study each night.

Science: We will finish up our review on "Simple Machines" this week.

Math:  This week we will begin a new "investigation" called Muffles Truffles.  It involves multiplication in a context (yummy truffles).  This will expand students' knowledge of arrays and multiples of ten.
 
Science: We will continue our study of simple machines.

Reading

Focus Skill: Locating Information
We will be reading several articles from Kid's Discover about the Great Depression.  The vocabulary words for this week are; Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Great Depression, auction, Hooverville, hobo, newsie, Dust Bowl.  The children will read an article a day about the Great Depression and answer and ask questions about what was read.

We will be working on personal narratives.

Week of January 6th
 
 
Math:  This week we will continue our multiplication unit.  We are going to continue our study of the 8's strategy (double double double).  I am pushing back the 3's test until the following week.  Please continue to encourage your child to play on Dreambox and practice multiplication facts each night.  Students will be receiving husky charms for each fact they pass off! 

 
Science:  This week we will begin a new unit on simple machines.

Reading

Focus Skill: Character Traits and Feelings
We will be reading Me and Uncle Romie.  The vocabulary words for this week are; memory, glorious, crept, ruined, heritage, masterpiece, dull, yanked, streak, towers.  The children will identify James' feelings toward Uncle Romie at the beginning, middle, and end of the story. They will use information from the story to cite evidence about his feelings.
