Week of May 12th

Math:  This week we will do a mini unit on measurement.  First we will learn about linear measurement and discuss customary and metric units of measurement.  Next, we will learn about measuring mass and liquid.

Please look through your child's books from home and return any that belong to Mrs. Owens and Ms. Smith.  We would really appreciate having those books back in our libraries!!

Week of April 21st


Math:  We are continuing our unit on Geometry.  Students will be learning new vocabulary and sorting shapes based on its attributes. The Geometry test will be given on Friday.

Science:  We will continue our study of weather. Students will be studying natural disasters and conducting research to share with the class.

Week of April 14th

Math:  We will finish up Fractions this week and students will have a test on Wednesday.  We will begin a unit on Geometry later this week.

*Please continue to have your child study multiplication every night and complete 60 minutes of Dreambox.

Science:  We will continue our study of weather.  Students will learn about various weather tools and symbols used on weather maps.

Week of April 7th


Math: We will continue our unit on fractions.  This week we will focus on equivalent fractions and looking at fractions on a number line (between 0 and 1).

Fluency:  PLEASE continue to work on multiplication fluency each day for homework.  It is important that your child continue to practice even after pass offs.

Science:  We will continue our unit on weather this week...and with that being said, what kind of weather have we been having this year? :)

Week of March 31st

Math: This week we are beginning our unit on fractions.  We will study fractions of a whole, fractions of a set, and fractions on a number line.

Fluency:  Please continue to have your child study multiplication fluency each day.  Even if your child has "passed off", he or she needs to continue to practice their facts.

Dreambox: If your child is absent on a Tuesday, he or she will need to do an additional 30 minutes of dreambox at home.  We go to the computer lab each Tuesday to complete the required school time of dreambox, which is 30 minutes.  Your child is graded each week based on the time he or she has spent on dreambox.  It is counted as a homework grade in the gradebook.

Science:  This week we will begin a unit on natural disasters.

Reading
Text: Beezus and Ramona by Beverly Cleary
The students will read the book Beezus and Ramona.  The vocabulary for this week is: exasperate, exasperated, exasperation, exasperating, modest. modestly, contradict, contradicting, confide, confided, indignant, admire.  We will be discussing the different forms of the words, as they appeared in the book.  We will be reviewing each chapter using different graphic organizers.
 
Reading Log:
Please have your child fill out the reading log each night after they have read 20 minutes. Parents need to sign and date the reading log each day. They should be at 30% of their goal by the end of this week.
 
Language
Writing
    We will continue writing narrative essays using a prompt.  We will edit and make improvements in the essays during the week. 
 
Language Skill-
     We will continue studying possessive nouns and pronouns.
 
Spelling – Unit 4 Lesson 3: Suffixes – ity, -less, - ness, - sion
This week's words are: activity, popularity, rarity, community, humanity, careless, endless, spotless, restless, homeless, kindness, sadness, silliness, happiness, goodness, explosion, discussion, collision, admission, division.  The test will be on Thursday. 
 
When studying these words, please talk about the meanings of each word.

Math:  We will continue to work on area and perimeter this week.
 
Fluency- Please continue to have your child practice multiplication facts at home.  Each week, students will be given timed tests with mixed multiplication facts to keep up their skills.  At this point, students should have already "passed off" on every fact.
 
Dreambox- Students are required to practice 60 minutes at home.  Your child will receive a grade each week for Dreambox.  Please let me know if computer problems arise and your child can come before school to make up his or her time.
 
 
Science:  We will continue our unit on Matter this week.  We will disuss the differences between physical and chemical changes.

Math:  This week we will have a multiplication/division assessement on Tuesday. We will begin a short unit on area and perimeter for the rest of the week.
 
 
Science:  This week we will be continuing our study of Matter.  We will talk about how substances can be soluble or insoluble. 
 
Please send a FULL plastic water bottle by Wednesday.  They may even purchase one at school in the lunchroom given your permission to do so.

Math:  This week we will continue our division unit.  The relationship between multiplication and division will continue to be reinforced.  Students will work on determining which operation would be used for various story problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).  A multiplication and division assessment will be given at the end of this week or next Monday. Also, we will pass off on 7's at the end of this week.  Please continue to study multiplication facts at home.
 
Science:  This week we will begin a new unit on Matter.  Students will look at the 3 different states of matter- solids, liquids, and gases.

The children will create a character sketch based on a picture set during the time of the Great Depression or Dust Bowl.
