Week Of October 21st

This week in Language Arts

Week of October 21

Reading

Focus Skill: Questioning

We will begin reading the book Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner. As we read the book together, we will discuss vocabulary that is confusing and new to the children.  There will be a reading comprehension and vocabulary test at the end of the unit.   We will also read nonfiction selections about Wyoming, potato farming, John Reynolds Gardiner and Samoyeds.

Reading Logs:

In your child’s folder you will find a pink reading log. Please have your child fill it out and you need to initial it nightly after they have read 20 minutes. Your child should be at 90% of his/her reading goal in AR.

Writing

We're using our Writer’s Notebook to create personal narratives. We will be learning how to edit as we write, and rehearsing storytelling and leads.

Language Skill

We will be learning about proper and common nouns.

Spelling

Unit 1 Lesson 6: Review Long vs. Short Vowel Sounds with Doubling and Dropping rules

This week's words are: cutting, bigger, dropping, hopping, hoping, shopper, sloping, liking, liked, braking, closing, shiny, shining, trader, bony, graded, muted, tuned, blaming, slopping. The test will be on Thursday.

When studying these words, please talk about the meanings of each word and the spelling rule used to spell short and long vowel sounds when adding a suffix.  There is a PowerPoint on my website to help with the rules.
